C & S No. 10........Whoops, make that D&RGW No. 151!!!

I mentioned on the locomotives page that the small tender/oversized loco would satisfy all but the biggest picker of nits.....well, I picked a couple of nits and went overboard. I started with the stock C&S #10 and instead of adding tender pickup, I built a new tender using an all styrene tender floor along with a white metal C-16 tender body. This keeps the tender floor from shorting out the tender pickup system. I used MT trucks, Marklin wheelsets and Richmond Controls wipers. I added a Digitrax DZ-121 decoder hidden under the coal load and using Miniatronics 1.5v bulbs, added the front and rear lights. The rear light is turned out of .100" styrene rod stock and the number boards added on. The front light is the stock C&S light with number boards added. I just drilled it out for the bulb and secured it with clear silicone sealant.

I ripped off the original beartrap stack and replaced it with a 'gun' style stack to give it a more D&RGW flavor. I also removed the marker lights from atop the smokebox and will eventually mount them on the front of the smokebox ala D&RGW as well. I repainted the whole thing and numbered it for D&RGW No. 151. This engine was originally a narrow gauge class 45 engine and was named "Ruxton". Built in 05/1881 is survived untill it was dismantled in Grand Junction, Colorado in 1902. I stretched the truth by lettering it as if it had survived into the late 1930's.  While my 151 looks little like the prototype, I think it makes a very nice 'could've been' locomotive for my San Juan Extension.
